Particular contributions by U-C scientists and mathematicians are another vantage point from which to observe the aspect's unifying attributes. That living and inorganic matter are subject to the same laws, laying the groundwork for modern medical apparatus, was the concept of 19th century physician Carl Ludwig⁶.

"Leibniz Law" is a mathematical principle and philosophical axiom that all things are identical to themselves, and all things with different properties cannot be identical. His work weaves the concepts of unity and separateness of all substances and beings. "Pre-established harmony" was his belief that we're programmed by God and that what happens to each of us "corresponds with what happens to all the others, without, however their acting upon one another directly". Leibniz believed there are alternatives to atoms, called monads, "which is one, has no parts and is therefore indivisible".⁷ Leibniz was a prolific inventor. Some his inventions were impossible to manufacture, being more advanced than 16th century fabrication possibilities.⁸ (See Tech and Science Challenges)

Darwin's findings on the unity and diversity in all life started with years of observing the tiny barnacle, until he noticed the barnacle's parasites exhibiting male characteristics which were non-existent on the usually hermaphroditic barnacles themselves. Of these clearly differentiated sexual characteristics, Darwin remarked the "males and females are so different as to appear almost unrelated". For Darwin, the gradual change in nature producing such a result, was a plausible illustration as to how life evolved. It was March, 1848, and transiting Chiron was conjunct natal Uranus. During the same transit, his friend and supporter, botanist John Hooker had grown tired of Darwin's barnacle obsession. Darwin lamented, "The one living soul from whom I have constantly received sympathy....your decided approval of my Barnacle work" was what "led me...to defer my species-paper" ⁹ (See__________

Before the discovery of genetics, Darwin wrestled with inherited traits, which he perceived to be "a mixture and not true fusion, of two distinct individuals". Darwin saw racial distinctions as superficial, having no reproductive consequences. "As man advances in civilization, and small tribes are united into larger communities... each individual ought to extend his social instincts and sympathies to all the members of the same nation, though personally unknown to him, then extend to the men of all nations and races. In The Descent of Man, he wrote "Experience unfortunately shows us how long it is, before we look at them as our fellow-creatures."¹⁰

The search for a single all-inclusive concept that would explain seemingly different phenomena has driven physics for hundreds of years. The first unifying discovery was made by Isaac Newton who explained the force of gravity, making the connection between a falling apple and the orbit of the moon.

Albert Einstein remarked: "I stand not on the shoulders of Newton, but on the shoulders of James Clerk Maxwell" whose work generated the "second great unification in physics". Maxwell's work brought together, for the first time, electricity, magnetism and light as manifestations of the same phenomenon, which we call electromagnetism. ¹¹

Einstein himself was born with Uranus//Chiron with Mercury and Saturn on the Uranus/Chiron midpoint. After his discovery that space and time were woven into a single continuum, it was 10 years before he could include acceleration, the final ingredient in his "Theory of Relativity" with progressed Uranus forming an exact aspect to natal Chiron (1915) ¹²

However, there is no observable incidence of U-C among the charts of the many contemporary physicists focused on "The Grand Unifying Theory" .

"The Unity of Effect" was Edgar Allen Poe's theory of effective writing. It was his conviction, in "Philosophy of Composition" that before beginning a work of fiction, the author must decide how it will end and which response or "effect" the author wishes to create. Once the "unity of effect" has been determined, the plot, characters and setting can then be created with the goal of creating that effect. ¹³

One of the most common events at the time of a transit or progression of Uranus/Chiron is the disunity of once unified families, associates, or nations.

Adult children leaving the family is one way the aspect can operate. Lincoln and Darwin were born on the same day. At age 22, they left their respective homes, when a transiting square of Uranus and Chiron triggered their natal U-C squares. Charlotte Bronte left home for the first time to become a governess when transiting Uranus was conjunct natal Chiron, for an unruly child who threw a bible at her, an event chronicled in Jane Eyre. Bronte had no outstanding natal U-C aspect. ¹⁴

Some family ruptures are uninvited. 22 year old George Eliot's horizons expanded with new friends whose free-thinking was at odds with the religious values with which she was raised, inciting the "Holy War" (her phrase) with her father when she refused to attend church. As a result, she was temporarily "disowned" by her father. Her new friends and the resulting schism with her father ¹⁵ occurred on a transiting square of Uranus to her natalu Saturn/Uranus/Chiron configuration. Of the split between ideological conviction versus family ties she wrote "Speculative truth (is) but a shadow of individual minds, agreement between intellects seems unattainable and we turn to the truth of feeling as the only universal bond of union". ¹⁶ Her religious opinions continued to diverge from her father's, but she returned to join him in church and went on to care for him until his dying day.

Separation from family is represented in a variety of ways: , i.e., Saturn in the 4th house and Moon/Saturn transits, as well as Chiron in aspect to a variety of planets.

From love triangles to philosophical differences,) friends and associates split for many different reasons, from love triangles to philosophical differences. When Billy Joel slept with his friend/band mate's wife, the friendship ended.¹⁷ P. Chiron was 2' from natal Uranus. Magritte's marriage became troubled when he met a young performance artist, Sheila Legge, and began an affair with her. Magritte arranged for his friend, Paul Colinet, to entertain and distract Georgette, but this led to an affair between Georgette and Colinet.

When Talking Heads broke up, David Byrne had T. Uranus conjunct N. Chiron (and he had the natal aspect). In defense of a scientific principle, Galileo had alienated his powerful previous supporter, the Pope, who sentenced Galileo to death. Progressed Uranus formed an exact semi square to natal Chiron (June, 1633). The Catholic Church has since come around and conceded there is no necessary conflict between science and faith. Galileo was praised as an intellectual hero by Pope Pius XII and Pope John Paul II apologized for his condemnation.¹⁸ But Darwin's findings on human evolution remains divisive between mainstream science and church based creationists. ¹⁹

Uranus/Chiron can make for 'strange bedfellows', a connection with a friend or group different from you, which may strain the limits of your involvement. When Abraham Lincoln left home, he worked on a commercial boat loaded with valuable cargo, which arrived in what was to become home for the next seven years. Upon arrival, his boat became stuck in a dam and as it filled with water, the townspeople of New Salem, Illinois gathered to watch Lincoln as he let the water out, plug the hole, save the cargo, winning the town's unwavering respect.²⁰ His distinction made him a target for the local tough guys, who challenged him to a fight, where his strength and fairness, won the gang's high regard, and they became useful in helping him win his first election to public office.²¹ But even when they helped, Lincoln was compromised by their bad behavior when they "got him in trouble and arrested". ²² Lincoln considered this series of incidents "the turning point" in his life" ²³ and occurred when the aforementioned transiting square of Uranus and Chiron triggered his own natal square.

When the insolvent drug-addicted titan of poetry, Samuel Coleridge, met William Wordsworth, P. Uranus was with P. Chiron in Wordsworth's chart. Together, they kick started poetry's Romantic Movement but the collaboration soured quickly.²⁴ In later years, Wordsworth was reviled as a turncoat by the rest of his friends, poets who turned on him after he accepted the well paid position of Poet Laureate from the government of which he was once so critical. His former friends wrote "he began as a champion of liberty" but "ended as its enemy" and "For just a handful of silver he left us…deserting these, though leavest me to grieve". ²⁵ Wordsworth's natal chart contained Sun=Uranus=Chiron, a T-square on the 90 degree dial. The entire picture is Sun=Uranus=Pluto=Kronos=Chiron. which describes, in detail, the problematic paid government position.

While still a child, Jiddu Krishnamurti was pronounced "world teacher" by Theosophists, and at age 15, he was installed as the head of The Order of the Star in the East, with transiting Chiron triggering his natal picture and dissolved when P. Chiron=N. Uranus precisely ( 1927). When the aspect was just 2' from exact, he broke with Theosophist Annie Besant, suddenly and publically. ²⁶ Her solar return contained Uranus/Chiron=Aries and Poseidon. Besant also had transiting Uranus conjunct her Ascendant in Aries, opposite her 7th house Venus in Libra. A change in affiliation can be symbolized in a number of ways.

There is a sad story about the friendship of Charles Dickens and Hans Christian Andersen, both born with U-C. When they first met, T.Uranus was square to T.Chiron, triggering Andersen's natal U-C square. Ten years later Andersen returned and stayed with Dickens for 5 weeks. When he finally left, Dickens had a sampler made and put over the guest's bed, "Hans Andersen slept in this room for five weeks - which seemed to the family AGES!" This time, T. Chiron triggered Andersen's N. U-C square and Dickens had a progressed UC contact (see data). Dickens and Anderson had other major personal problems at this same time: Dickens was soon to divorce and Andersen's mother became hospitalized, permanently. ²⁷

Ruptures in political parties, governments and even within countries can also occur with U-C.

India's partition occurred while India Gandhi was Prime Minister. She had natal Uranus/Chiron=Aries.

"The Great Unifier", Abraham Lincoln, presided over a country separated by secession. Lincoln was born with Uranus/Chiron as were the two presidents who followed, Johnson and Grant, who tried to consolidate the states which had seceded. APPENDIX? Earlier in Lincoln's career, when transiting Chiron was conjunct natal Uranus, Whig Congressman Lincoln introduced a resolution opposing the Mexican-American War, inviting the criticism of his own political party, his constituents and his law partner. His party was also deeply divided on the slavery issue, and when the conjunction reoccurred, he addressed a political convention. "The people of Illinois agreed with the people of Massachusetts on the subject, except perhaps that they didn't keep so constantly thinking about it". ²⁸

Among the pictures for Brexit in David Cameron's chart was P. Uranus=Chiron. Theresa May has the natal aspect, part of a larger picture that includes Saturn=Uranus=Pluto=Chiron. Winston Churchill, born with a trine, switched political parties more than once and was excluded from his party's government when Uranus was conjunct his natal Chiron and trine to natal Uranus (1931), leading to a nine-year hiatus from political service, known as his "wilderness years".²⁹ Churchill also had natal Saturn in Aquarius. FDR was also born with a trine. When T. Uranus was conjunct N. Chiron he campaigned against the reelection of members of his own party who were not supportive of his New Deal (1938) ³⁰

Very common are technical or scientific inventions or events with a range of difficulties: resistance to innovation, disuse, flaws, failure, harm and even criminal activity.

Justice Department files antitrust suit accuses Google of monopoly

Peter Zinovieff (N. Uranus/Chiron he supplied tech to Pink Floyd and Roxy Music) handed over his full studio — including advanced prototypes of an interactive video terminal and a 10-octave pressure-sensitive keyboard — to the National Theater, in London, which belatedly found that it couldn’t raise funds to maintain it. The equipment was dismantled and stored for years in a basement, and it was eventually ruined in a flood.

A Luddite refers to someone who is resistant to technology. Named for the 19th century group opposed to industrialization, the movement was ended by a trial in 1813,³¹ with transiting Uranus square to transiting Chiron. Over 150 years later, Bob Dylan was booed when he went electric, with transiting Uranus ssq natal Chiron. Dylan had no outstanding natal symbolism.³²

Uranus/Chiron is also seen with unused invention. Lincoln was the only U.S. President to hold a patent, on an invention that would help raise boats that were stuck, inspired by his own aforementioned experience, but the invention went unused. ³³ Braille, the system enabling blind people to read, was never used in the Louis Braille's lifetime.³⁴ Both Lincoln and Braille had the natal square. The first phone in the White House went unused because no one else had a phone.³⁵ Born with a natal square, when the unused phone was installed, then-President Rutherford B. Hayes had both progressed and transiting Uranus precisely at the midpoint.

Just before he published his influential work on relativity, Einstein was informed by another scientist that he'd committed an error. "My previous method of proof was fallacious (the other scientist)found a hair in my soup". ³⁶Einstein's P. Uranus =P. Chiron (1915).³⁶ Years later, Einstein remarked "Science does more harm than good". During war it gave people "the means to poison and mutilate one another", and in peace science "has made our lives hurried and uncertain..it has enslaved men to machines long wearisome hours mostly without joy in their labor.";³⁷ P. Uranus=N. Chiron at the time (February 1931).

Setbacks, sometimes severe, occurred to science and technology giants at the time of Uranus/Chiron contacts. For defending the rotation of the earth around the sun, Galileo was sentenced to life imprisonment for heresy by his former friend and supporter Pope Urban VIII. The event illustrated both the problematic potential of Uranus/Chiron for science as well as a divided friendship. Progressed Uranus formed an exact semi square to Galileo's natal Chiron, and Urban had P. Sun=Uranus/Chiron (3' orb). ³⁸

The air brake, called "the most important safety device every known"³⁹ was invented by 22 year old George Westinghouse after seeing two trains collide because, despite seeing each other, the engineers of both trains were unable to stop them in time. But when Westinghouse first obtained the patent (his first), he was unsuccessful at selling it to 19^th century rail companies who found the brakes too expensive to implement.⁴⁰ At the time of the patent, T. Uranus squared Westinghouse's natal Sun, which was conjunct Chiron and opposite Uranus ( April 13, 1869). It took years (and several avoidable rail accidents) before he finally came up with a more marketable version. Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone with transiting Uranus and Chiron in aspect, both in aspect to his natal Chiron. It began a slew of lawsuits which dogged him for 25 years.⁴¹

Steve Jobs had no outstanding UC symbolism but when T. Chiron conjoined N. Uranus in 1984, the Mac was introduced. Despite its ultimate importance, at the time people were just not buying them⁴², leading to his resignation/firing from Apple, his own company, ⁴³ T. Uranus and T. Chiron were both stationary and in opposition to each other, triggering Jobs' natal Mars/Saturn configuration, which sat on the midpoint of Uranus/Chiron (September 13, 1985). 2 weeks later, with the same aspects in place, Jobs founded the unprofitable NeXT. ⁴⁴ When he returned to Apple in September, 1997, Jobs was presiding over these two commercially debilitated companies, so he obtained a cash infusion from his archrival Bill Gates, in return for an Apple/Microsoft Office arrangement.⁴⁵ Transiting Chiron was square to natal Uranus and progressed Chiron was exact with Uranus by minor aspect. The event illustrated technical challenges and the potential for strange bedfellows, both characteristic attributes of Uranus/Chiron. Bill Gates had P. Chiron just 2' from an exact opposition to natal Uranus.

Gates had no outstanding natal symbolism either, but one year later, when his progressed opposition was exact, Microsoft was charged with uncompetitive practices in a televised hearing in 1998. Microsoft submitted wrong videos as evidence and at one point, the judge laughed at Gates' evasiveness regarding the baldly incriminating memo "We need to continue our jihad",⁴⁶ written when transiting Chiron squared his natal opposition ( March 13, 1997). On his videotaped testimony, he was "combative and defensive, as if he couldn't believe how stupid (this) was. He didn't expect the tape to be shown in court. It was and it was a disaster. Public opinion turned". It "cut Bill to the core", said Gates' partner, Paul Allen.⁴⁷

Microsoft was charged with violation of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, intended to prevent unfair competition in any industry. Its author, Senator John Sherman, was born with natal Uranus square Chiron and the Sherman Anti-Trust Act was put into legislation in July 1890, when T. Uranus was square T. Chiron

Distressing technical events unfolded for Thomas Edison and his invention of the talking doll, now regarded as the first entertainment recordings. He introduced the dolls when T. Uranus conjoined N. Chiron (April, 1890). The dolls were damaged in shipping, resulting in a "horrifying cry", which so frightened children that it was withdrawn from the market six weeks later,⁴⁸ when Uranus returned to form the same conjunction to his natal Chiron.

Around the same time, Edison was on the losing side of the AC/DC "War of the Currents" with George Westinghouse. Edison actively lobbied for the use of the rival AC current for the first use of the electric chair (although Edison was against capital punishment), recognizing it as an opportunity for propaganda, associating AC current with something quick and deadly. He wrote to the Commission on Humane Execution recommending "alternating (current) machines, manufactured principally by George Westinghouse". The electric chair's designer was on Edison's payroll and also on the commission's panel that ultimately selected AC current for the electrocution. Edison provided the AC generators. Westinghouse protested and funded the sentenced prisoner's appeals.⁴⁹ The first execution failed on the first attempt. The generators took so long to recharge before the second attempt, that the prisoner's skin began to singe and witnesses reported the smell of burning flesh. News reports condemned the execution as "a disgrace to civilization".⁵⁰ George Westinghouse commented that "they would have done better using an axe." ⁵¹ The event was marked in Edison's chart by a conjunction of transiting Uranus to natal Chiron. (August 6, 1890) Westinghouse was born with the natal aspect and a precise U-C square appeared in his SR.

UC was one symbolic component of other deadly technical incidents. Several astronauts and cosmonauts who died in space had the natal symbolism or UC contacts by transit, progression or in the solar return. The two failures in the Space Shuttle Program eacg had some incidence of U-C symbolism. Five of the six astronauts in the Challenger disaster (January 28, 1986) had natal U-C symbolism by major aspect; one by minor aspect (DATA). The Space Shuttle Columbia was the second tragedy in the program with transiting Uranus ssq transiting Chiron (February 1, 2003). Three of the seven astronauts had a transiting contact; one had both a natal picture and a transiting contact; two others had natal symbolism (one by minor aspect). Two had no discernible U-C contacts. Other contacts of interest: one astronaut had transiting Uranus conjunct natal South Node in Aquarius and another had T. Uranus on the anticia of natal Saturn.

The first Russian atomic bomb test occurred on a conjunction on August 31, 1949. A series of safety hazards tarnished the reputations of the manufacturers of the Chevy Vega and Ford Pinto, introduced within one day of each other, with Uranus exactly opposite Chiron. The Pinto is still cited in legal ethics cases. ⁵²

History was changed for the worst by powerful divisive propaganda, generated by technical media,

marked by Uranus/Chiron contacts. "The Voice of the Arabs" radio stated intention was as a "forger of Arab unity", (Italics mine) but instead, it "ignited squabbles; it was launched when Abdel Nasser, born with a natal midpoint picture, had transiting Uranus was opposite natal Chiron. "It was a weapon...rather than a genuinely collective voice" and went on to be at the center of coups in neighboring Arab countries, dissolving their political parties (italics mine) and overseeing their exits from the United Arab Republic. ⁵³

Germans first heard a recorded speech by soon-to-be chancellor Adolf Hitler stating his intention to crush all opposition when he had P. Uranus=Chiron exact by minor aspect. MINOR ASPECTS "We are intolerant. We have one goal before us, to fanatically and ruthlessly shove all these parties into the grave." (July 27, 1932)⁵⁴ Soon after his election, with the progression still exact, Hitler began to use IBM punch cards to identify Jews and Gypsies living in Germany to facilitate their imprisonment and extermination. "Nazi Germany soon became the second most important customer of IBM, after the US", leading to an increase in IBM's investment, which incited calls for an international boycott of IBM. Hitler had no natal configuration. Thomas Watson, IBM's president, was born with a natal configuration, which was triggered by a station of T. Mars, on the day Hitler began to use the punch cards (April 12, 1933).⁵⁵

"The Watergate Tapes", central to the investigation and Richard Nixon's eventual resignation, were dotted with Uranus/Chiron symbolism. When the existence of tapes were made public, transiting Chiron stationed opposite transiting Uranus, both square to Nixon's Sun. (July 13, 1973). Nixon's secretary, Rosemary Woods, was blamed for missing portions of the "Watergate Tapes". Nixon was born with Moon=Uranus/Chiron and Woods had natal Node=Uranus/Chiron, the latter picture appearing in their respective solar returns operative for 1973. The "Vigorous instigator" of wiretaps and bugging, Nixon official Robert Mardian (natal U-C) was indicted.⁵⁶

Monica Lewinsky's recorded phone calls led to Bill Clinton's impeachment. She has a natal opposition, in Aries and Libra in her 1st and 7th houses. When the Federal Prosecutor had Linda Tripp tape phone calls with her, Lewinsky's P. Uranus was 1' from N. Chiron (January 13, 1998).⁵⁷ Tripp had natal Uranus/Chiron progressed Vulcanus 1' from her natal Uranus/Chiron midpoint (as well as P. Mercury square to N. Neptune.) when she recorded and betrayed her friend.

The constitutionality of wiretaps were first established with the conviction of bootlegger Roy Olmstead, which used police wiretaps as evidence. Born with a natal picture, on the day of his conviction (January 19, 1925),⁵⁸ transiting Chiron was square to Olmstead's natal Uranus and opposite his Sun.

In a small sample of 11 victims of cyber bullying, 5 had transiting Uranus-Chiron contacts. The combination appeared more frequently than any other. DATA CYBER BULLYING

Isaac Newton's most productive period was made possible by the Great Plague. The University closed down, his time was his own, and he used it to lay the foundations of calculus and "began to think of gravity...all this was in the plague years of 1665 and 1666, for in those days I was in my prime age for invention, more than any time since".⁵⁸ T. Uranus conjoined T. Chiron, triggering Newton's U-C configuration. But 27 years later, when T. Uranus stationed conjunct his N. Charles Darwin's scientific work was also impacted by the opportunities and setbacks of lifelong physical sensitivities. Thomas Eagleton was dropped as a Vice Presidential candidate when his history of ECT was revealed. ⁷⁰ Born with a prominent natal U-C aspect, at the time of the disclosure, Uranus stationed on the Uranus/Chiron midpoint and his SR contained Mercury=Uranus=Chiron within one degree of orb. Broken fictional families are found everywhere in the work of U-C artists. Steven Spielberg work is characterized as an "obsessive career long concentration on broken families".⁷¹ Fictional orphans Gary Coleman ("Different Strokes"), Soleil Moonfrye ("Punky Brewster") and Hayley Mills ("Pollyanna") were all born with U-C. The real life murder trial of the Menendez brothers, eventually imprisoned for murdering their parents, was televised. Their recorded therapy sessions were ruled not to be protected by confidentiality, and used as admissible evidence against them, on August 7, 1990.⁷² Both Lyle and Erik have natal U-C aspects, and at the time of the event Lyle had P. Uranus/Chiron appears by major and minor aspects in the charts of real and fictional TV doctors.

Dr. Phil, Dr. Ruth and Dr. Joyce Brothers all have the natal picture. Dr. Oz has Venus on the midpoint, and his show premiered⁷³ when transiting Uranus formed a semi-octile to his natal Chiron. Fictional TV doctors--Bob Newhart (TV psychologist), Alan Alda and Mike Farrel ("Mash"), Denzel Washington ("St. Elsewhere), George Clooney ("E.R"); the leads in "Grey's Anatomy" have major natal aspects and Dr. House and Dr. Kildare have minor aspects.

Fictional character with disabilities are sometimes portrayed by artists with U-C aspects. For his portrayal of an autistic savant in "Rain Man", Dustin Hoffman won an Oscar, as did Matt Damon and Ben Affleck for "Good Will Hunting", whose hero undergoes therapy rather than jail time. Derek Jacobi's portrayal of an emperor with a stammer and a limp in "I Claudius" catapulted him to prominence. His natal chart and SR contained Sun=Uranus/Chiron. "Porgy and Bess" a musical about a disabled beggar married to an outcast, premiered when its composer George Gershwin's progressed Uranus was conjunct natal Chiron. In a real-life health/media incident, David Letterman announced on his show that he would have an angiogram the following day, which resulted in an emergency quintuple bypass from which he did not return to TV for five weeks.
