So far Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy protection, while Merrill Lynch agreed to sell itself to Bank of America. And--fearing a financial crisis worldwide-- the Fed reversed course and agreed to an $85 billion bailout that would give the government control of the troubled insurance giant AIG.
